What's Present Now | Simple Practice | Updates + Offerings
Greetings Reader,
How is your soul these days?
As we continue to navigate a world that feels heavy, dark and downright scary sometimes, I’ve noticed two common reactions in the collective:
- folks becoming despondent, fearful and hopeless
- folks choosing to tune out and numb themselves
It was the first one for me. I noticed how easy it was to be pulled into the spiral of despair when scrolling on social media or hearing news updates. I realized it was time to shore up my spiritual practices if I want to continue serving in the wellness space.
So today, I joined The Sanctuary - a sacred online space held by a spiritual teacher I’ve been working with for several years. Now, I have a fairly regular meditation practice, but even with her sound guidance, I still found myself really struggling to bring my mind into a quiet place during meditation.
But during the session, a remarkable thing happened. Even though my mind chatter was constant and distracting, I began to notice an expanding sensation in my body. It was as though I could feel my heartbeat down in my lower chakras. Definitely a new one for me!
My mind immediately tried to interpret this new and strange feeling. What does this mean? Why is this happening? More questions, reasoning, logic. Finally, I knew that I simply needed to just be with the feeling. Being present was the point. Not “understanding”, just feeling. So I tuned inwards to stay with the sensation. Noticing, breathing, being. The mind didn’t entirely stop, but it did slow down and I was able to practice being truly present in the moment.
This I Know: No matter how noisy the outside world is, no matter how busy or overwhelmed our minds are, the powerful presence of spirit can help us stay grounded and steady. At any time, we can choose to tune inwards and reconnect to the present moment. Only from that place of truth can clarity, courage and strength emerge.
Simple Practice
Plugging Into Earth
For moments when you’d like a break from the mental noise, busyness or overwhelm, plug into earth. Either stand or sit with both feet on the floor. Place your right hand over your heart, your left hand on your lower belly. Then, gently close your eyes and receive three deep, slow, intentional breaths.
Notice yourself being supported by the earth beneath you. Return as often as you need.
